Meme! Meme! Meme!

The current "Meme o' the Moment" is "Do what you love". Both Nad and Rob have weighed in on the topic, and contributed with their usual insight. And as I write, Nad has tweeted:
"Chase your passion, not your pension"
- Denis Waitley
At first, I thought they hadn't left me anything to say. And indeed, this was going to be a much different post until I sat down, pried my laptop away from Pink Goddess, and began to write. But oddly, it was the act of opening my laptop that focussed what I want to say.

Because things like my laptop, the original Dyson vacuum cleaner, the Mk 1 Golf GTi, and Queen's "'39" are linked by this meme. How so? Because you cannot fake passion. Excitement does not arrive on schedule. Genius does not clock in at 9 and out again at 5:30. Oh, and while we're on the subject, the good is the enemy of the great. How often have you said 'that'll do?' That isn't passion, it's clocking in and out.

You need to love what you do, because loving what you do is the only way to produce something that's not just good, but great. Or even insanely great.

And that is what we should aim for. And I'd like to close with a quote from someone who knows a thing or two about passion:

"Insanely Great!"

Steve Jobs, on the Apple Macintosh Computer, US computer engineer & industrialist (1955 - )
